Workshop: Innovation in Materials Characterisation

 Prof. Kenji Kano.

Dr. Jeannie Tan attended the Innovation in Materials Characterisation: UK–Japan Studies on Energy–related Materials Using Synchrotron Radiation workshop organised EPSRC-JSPS (Japanese Society for Promotion of Science) on the 22nd February 2018 in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. In the one–day workshop, a total of nine talks were presented. All of the talks have revealed the research work using synchrotron radiation (X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy, powder diffraction, X–ray absorption, X–ray absorption fine structure, etc.) and they share some of the exciting research experience on Synchrotron beamlines. Real time change of the materials during the synthesis (in situ) and/or during the catalytic energy production process (operando) was presented by the research scientists from both UK and Japan. Among the talks, the presentations delivered by Prof. Masaharu Oshima and Prof. Kenji Kano amazed her.

Prof. Oshima demonstrated the operando investigation of Pt–Co compound at ambient pressure with high humidity, which is normally difficult to achieve at a synchrotron beamline. Prof. Kano presented the importance of mesoporous support for CO2 photoreduction to enhance the photocatalytic performance.
