Second Industrial CO2 Capture Project Meeting – 30th Oct 2017

The University of Sheffield hosted the second project meeting for the Industrial CO2 Capture project on 30th Oct. 2017. The meeting was conducted in Pam Liversidge Building at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. 

Funded by EPSRC, this project is a multidisciplinary collaboration between scientists and engineers from Heriot-Watt University, University of Sheffield and Newcastle University, in which the aim is to realise our vision of integration novel hydrotalcite solid sorbents with advanced heat integration processes for industrial CO2 capture. The objectives of this collaboration are to enhance the performance of hydrotalcites sorbents for high-temperature CO2 capture and design a suitable process that combines the roles of heat management and mass transfer to ensure the viability of large-scale capture. 

The meeting started with a warm welcome to the new researchers and students, followed by project updates and actions to be taken. Researchers from all three universities presented their recent research progress in the molecular modelling of hydrotalcites, novel hydrotalcites synthesized and waste heat available in industrial processes such as cement, steel production and refineries. As a highlight, the hydrotalcites synthesised shown a promising CO2 adsorption performance and able to retain 100% of its capacity even after 45 cycles. During the next period, samples of the hydrotalcite synthesized will be tested in the 3D printed fluidised bed at Newcastle University to study their hydrodynamics behaviours. 

Heriot-Watt University will be the host for the next project meeting during the second quarter of 2018. We look forward to welcoming our project partners with our lovely Spring weather in Edinburgh.
