Research Fellow/Programme Manager

School of Engineering & Physical Sciences, Institute of Mechanical, Process & Energy Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton, UK

Biography

DrĀ Amir Jahanbakhsh is a Research Fellow and Programme Manager at the Research Centre for Carbon Solutions (RCCS) at Heriot-Watt University. Amir holds a PhD in Petroleum Engineering, with a focus on the physics of multiphase flow in geological formations. With a strong background in reservoir engineering and a deep understanding of complex subsurface processes, his research focuses on geological CO2 storage as a permanent and safe solution. Additionally, his work advances subsurface energy storage (e.g., hydrogen storage) to support a just energy transition.

Since Amir joined RCCS in 2016, he has been involved in managing large multinational multidisciplinary consortium projects across the CCUS value chain, including MILEPOST, Low Carbon Jet Fuel, PrISMa, and USorb-DAC, demonstrating his expertise in managing large-scale, multidisciplinary initiatives. His contributions have not only resulted in impactful research outputs but have also strengthened global collaborations. His awarded projects, such as those funded by UKCCSRC and IDRIC, reflect the trust and recognition he has earned within the field.

Beyond his research, Amir is committed to education and outreach. He has mentored postgraduate students through their master’s and PhD theses, fostering a new generation of researchers equipped to tackle challenges in energy and sustainability. Additionally, he has shown a passion for bringing science to the public through various outreach activities, bridging the gap between complex research and public understanding. He has been voluntarily serving as an advisor at Heriot-Watt Net-Zero Society and is also part of the IDRIC Early Career Research Academy. His dedication to public engagement highlights his commitment to inspiring future scientists and influencing energy policies to support a sustainable transition. Through these efforts, Amir continues to be a prominent advocate for advancing research that addresses global challenges and benefits society as a whole.
