School of Engineering & Physical Sciences, Institute of Mechanical, Process & Energy Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton, UK
Biography
Duncan McMillan is a GIF CDT PhD student at Heriot-Watt. Duncan worked at an energy consultancy after graduating from Strathclyde University, helping industrial clients make their processes more efficient and sustainable. He also consulted for a power-to-methane startup that utilises a DAC process. His research is focused on taking a holistic approach to MOF discovery for DAC applications, using the PrISMa platform.
Duncan McMillan graduated from Strathclyde University in 2019, with a MEng in Chemical and Process Engineering. His master’s thesis was an industrial placement at Cotopaxi Energy, ‘Implementing wide-ranging energy audits to provide operational improvements’. Duncan then worked at Cotopaxi Energy for over four years, working with various industrial clients to help make their processes more sustainable by carrying out energy audits and metering projects. Duncan then attempted to start a company focusing on knowledge management and process improvement in industry, before shuttering the idea and consulting for a power-to-methane startup. The power-to-methane startup has a calcium cycle DAC system as their CO2 source, which is then fed with hydrogen to their Sabatier reactor.
