Descriptions


High-value products used in the manufacturing of different chemicals are obtained in the separation of coal tar by distillation. However, low-value liquids such as creosotes, light oils or phenolic oils are also produced in this process. PROMOTEE is a European project with the main objective to obtain different novel activated carbons (ordered mesoporous and carbon gels) for CO2 capture using these low-value coal-derived liquids as precursors using specific templates. The advantage of these novel activated carbons is a better control of the porous structure of the material.

In this project there are different institutions: Universities, Research centres and private companies, which are responsible for different tasks, such as the production of the activated carbons by different activation processes, to provide the low-value liquids and the evaluation of the activated carbons for different energy processes.

At Heriot-Watt, our objective is to evaluate and determine the best-activated carbons produced in the different universities and research centres and correlate the production process, and the properties and characteristics of the materials with their CO2 capture capacities.
